Let’s face it: Decorating a home is expensive.
And while many of us don’t mind paying a little extra for quality pieces we love that we know will withstand the test of time, it’s not realistic to go all out with every single purchase.
Especially when those purchases are for kids’ rooms.
Because today My Little Pony might be the coolest thing on the planet, but six months from now it’ll be labeled as too “baby-ish.” And then you’ll have to purge all things MLP because it would be suuuuuper embarrassing to have anything MLP in your home. (I obviously don’t have any firsthand experience with any of these kinds of epic meltdowns over room decor choices. Obviously.)
In short, the decor you buy today for your son or daughter’s room or kids playroom isn’t necessarily going to be around forever.
That’s why I try and find clever ways to incorporate fun, stylish decor into kids’ rooms that’ll withstand the test of time…..all without blowing my decorating budget.
These nine easy kids’ room DIY decor ideas are proof that there are SO many ways to blend what’s fun and cool with what’s affordable to create a room you and your kids love for years to come!
Take a look at these genius ideas from some of my favorite ladies on the interwebs.
And make sure to tell me in the comments — is there a DIY you see below that would be a great addition to your son or daughter’s room?
Fun & Easy DIY Kids Room Decor Crafts & Ideas
1. DIY Decorative Pom Pom Letters via Designer Trapped
I didn’t think I could be more crazy about pom poms in decor……until I saw these ADORABLE wall letters that Tasha at Designer Trapped created. I mean, how freaking cute is this?! You can customize these to match your child’s favorite colors or the existing color scheme in her room. Get the tutorial here.
2. DIY Abstract Art via Dimples & Tangles
Sure, Jennifer created this low-cost DIY abstract artwork for her powder room, but this would be such a fun and easy way to add a splash of color to any kid’s room. Take it one step further and have your son or daughter help you create this abstract art for a masterpiece they’ll love showing off to friends. Get all the details here.
3. DIY Wallpaper Stools via This Little Street
If you’ve got a plain ol’ IKEA Bekvam stool sitting around, then you definitely need this fun tutorial from This Little Street to give that step stool a happy-hued upgrade. Audrey used wallpaper to give these IKEA stools a pop of color, but you could easily spruce them up with some paint or a stencil, too. The options are endless. Check out the tutorial here.
4. DIY Kids’ Art Gallery Wall via The Caterpillar Years
If you’ve got the next Monet living under your roof, and you’re storing those masterpieces in every nook and cranny of your home, then you’re going to love Heather’s art gallery wall. This is a great way to display your child’s artwork prominently and make it easy to switch out those gorgeous creations again…and again…and again. Check out the easy instructions here.
5. DIY Cushion for an IKEA-Kallax-Turned-Bench via Kate Decorates
This easy, no-sew cushion tutorial for the IKEA Kallax is one of my most popular posts — and for good reason. While a custom IKEA Kallax bench cushion will run you at least $150 on Etsy, my version requires zero sewing and cost me about $50. See the full tutorial right over here.
6. DIY Scalloped Mirrors via A Kailo Chic Life
If you’re looking for a simple way to breathe new life into a boring, builder basic mirror, then you’ll love Kara’s tutorial. Using adhesive vinyl and a circle punch, she created this trio of fun and colorful mirrors. I can totally envision these on a wall in my daughter’s room. Get the details right here.
7. DIY Striped Desk (and Matching Wallpaper!) via Jeweled Interiors
Love the idea of wallpaper, but terrified to take the plunge? This creative idea from my pal Jewel uses removable Tempaper mini stripes to give a desk and a wall a pop of personality in her daughter’s room. High on style, but low on commitment. My favorite kind of project! Get the details here.
8. DIY Removable Pom Pom Trim Lamp via Kate Decorates
I was moments away from tossing an old lamp in the trash, but instead decided to upcycle it into a few fixture for my daughter’s room. A coat of spray paint and some simple (and removable!) pom pom trim made for an easy and quick upgrade. (Hey, I mentioned my love affair with pom poms, right?! I wasn’t kidding.) Read the full post right here.
9. Rainbow Fan Garland via Ice Cream Off Paper Plates
A fun strand of garland is always a great finishing touch for any child’s room, and this rainbow version is such a simple but stunning DIY. Louisa created this masterpiece from folded pieces of card stock. That’s it. So good, right?! Learn how to make your own rainbow fan garland here.
