A 15-Minute DIY Pom Pom Lamp

I’ve got a special treat for you guys today! I’m participating in a Color Splash Blog Hop, which means that several other color-loving ladies and I have all joined forces to bring you blog posts about some of our favorite color-filled projects. Today’s post is all about a super easy DIY that I just tackled: I gave an old lamp a face lift, and now it has a new home in my daughter’s bedroom.

Moral of the story: If you have a lamp that’s no longer your style, don’t throw it away! There are lots of quick, simple ways to give it new life, and that’s exactly what we’re chatting about today.

Here’s the lovely “before” of a lamp I purchased over 4 years ago. (And don’t you love that the “before” was taken in my garage at 10pm on a Monday night? Because doesn’t everyone spray paint lamps on weeknights after doing dishes and putting the kids to bed?)

Ick. The yellow seemed like a good idea years ago as I was roaming around the clearance aisles of Target, but today this guy doesn’t really coordinate with any of the rooms in our home.

Not to mention that the ribbon trim is coming off….YIKES.

The lamp on my daughter’s dresser recently broke (meaning my two-year old ripped the on/off switch right off the side of the lamp), so this seemed like a perfect time to tackle a DIY to salvage this old yellow table lamp and give her some new lighting. Enter the easiest pom-pom trim lamp EVER.

My favorite part? I didn’t even have to use hot glue for this (which I hate because it makes SUCH a mess). Wanna know my secret weapon for adhering the pom poms to the shade? Keep reading!

DIY POM POM TRIM LAMP: WHAT YOU’LL NEED

• An old lamp
• Spray paint in the color of your choice (I used this brand in Metallic Warm Gold)
• Crafting pom-poms in assorted sizes and colors of your choice (I grabbed mine on clearance at Michael’s, but Amazon also offers crafting pom-poms for a good deal)
• Peel-and-stick fabric tape
• Painter’s tape

DIY POM POM TRIM LAMP: INSTRUCTIONS

• Remove the lamp shade from the base. Set it aside.
• Wrap the lamp cord, along with the harp and socket, with painter’s tape to protect it during the spray painting process.
• Spray paint your lamp base, using 2-3 light coats of paint. Allow for drying time in between coats.
• Once the paint is dry, remove the painter’s tape from the lamp.
• While your paint is drying, remove any ribbon trim from your lamp shade. If the trim can’t easily be removed, you may need to purchase a new shade.
• Using 6″ strips of the peel-and-stick fabric tape, line the edge of the lamp shade with tape. Attach your pom poms, leaving the desired amount of space between each one.
• Repeat the above step with the fabric tape and pom-poms until you’ve adhered the poms around the entire edge of the shade.

You probably guessed this already, but the secret weapon I mentioned? It’s the fabric tape.

I was SO pumped to find a no-mess way to give the lamp shade a makeover.

And you can’t even see the fabric tape, even when you’re looking at the lamp up close. See?

There you have it! A quick and easy (and non-messy!) DIY lamp makeover.

This would be so cute in a playroom, a kids’ homework room, or even in another room of the home where you’re looking to add some whimsy.
